Updating Hopper’s software

Two software components work together when you use Hopper. One part is the Cedar Aim app on your phone or tablet, and the other part is the software that runs in Hopper’s embedded processor. Usually the Cedar Aim app updates automatically after you install it on your phone or tablet; newer versions of Cedar Aim generally work with older versions of Hopper’s software.

Updating the Hopper processor’s software is not automatic— you have full control over when Hopper’s software is updated as described below.

Note: Updating Hopper’s software carries some risk of failure, leaving your Hopper non-operational. If this happens CS Astro will fully support you in recovering your Hopper to a good state… but because of this risk you might not want to update Hopper right before you are about to travel to a dark sky site.

Updating the Cedar Aim app

You update the Cedar Aim app on your phone or tablet through the app store you used to install the app. This is usually automatic.

Updating Hopper’s software

Updating the software in Hopper’s embedded processor is a multi-step procedure.

  1. Use your mobile device with Hopper normally: connect your mobile to Hopper’s WiFi and run the Cedar Aim app. If you’ve ever used Hopper on your telescope, this step is already done.

  2. Close the Cedar Aim app on your mobile device. Instructions for Apple. Instructions for Android.

  3. Disconnect your mobile device from Hopper’s WiFi and connect your mobile device to the Internet over your home WiFi or using mobile data.

  5. Tap the Continue to App button.

  6. Connect your mobile to Hopper’s WiFi.

  7. In the Cedar Aim menu, enable Advanced.

  8. In the menu, under System, tap Check for Update.

  12. Check the version: Menu, System, About. Tap the ‘view’ button next to Versions.
